The Problem With Being Competent

Mike’s birthday is Friday. Now, I’m no more jealous than the next gal but let me tell you a story. Mike and I have had a pretty rough year so far. We’re paying back a bank loan and Mike spent 3 months unemployed earlier this year. We’re slowly getting back on our feet, slowly. Right now I’m waiting for my monthly paycheck. We are out of cash and out of options until I get it. I should get it by Thursday. Mike’s parents decided we should have a barbeque. At our house. This Friday. Mike’s mom said she would bake a cake but she’s so busy. She’ll give us some money though. She cant help us with shoping but we can borrow the car. She wasn’t too busy to take mike’s older sister and the entire family (except yours truly) to the zoo for her birthday. She wasn’t too busy to buy her a microwave. I realize that Mike and I are exhibiting competence and we’re making it on our own. In my mind there’s no other option but to make it on you own. But that doesn’t mean we have to get this treatment every time. Sarah gets the job done, no need to worry about her. Just throw some money her way and she’ll Martha Stewart her way out of anything. Including getting a barbeque together in 3 hours on a Friday. Just coz I make it fine on my own doesn’t mean I don’t need some help sometimes. But as Doctor Phi; says, you teach people how to treat you, so I guess it's probably my fault.

Dr Phil is a hack... If behaving competently means I'm teaching people never to help me then I'm doomed.

Of course this is the same guy who despite being a little pudgy himself, seems to think he has all the answers when it comes to weight loss...

Good luck Sarah, and know that if I were in Israel, I'd totally help you out, and I'd bring liquor.
